     Our Animals

 Our Peafowl

Although Peafowl can be used as meat stock, we raise these birds to add color to the farm. These birds are very sociable and they frequently approach the house and look into the windows for company. For some reason, they like to follow us or other animals around the farm including the turkeys, chickens and horses. Although very friendly, they do spook easily - our challenge is to convince our dogs not to attempt to herd them like they do the turkeys.

Our Peafowl enjoy their freedom around the farm on nice days and return to their pen in the evening. We are hoping they will be running around with their chicks this year.

The Peacock frequently hangs out on our deck fanning to his reflection in the window. This is very entertaining for visitors.

Our Turkeys

We have free-range non-medicated turkeys for meat purposes. Our breeding stock includes purebred Bronze, Royal Palm, Grey Slate and hybrid crosses. Through prior experience we knew the hybrid turkey is not self sufficient - they do not free-range and cannot breed naturally nor reproduce without the use of incubators. We discovered that cross breeding the hybrid with a more robust species produces a free range turkey that produces a lot of meat but is somewhat self sufficient. We supplement our turkeys with corn but during the summer they are quit happy foraging for their own food. We like to allow the turkeys to incubate and raise their own young whenever possible. We use our dogs to help herd them back to the barn if we want to put them away early otherwise, all our livestock travel back into their pens on their own at dusk.  All our animals are housed inside each night to protect them from local dogs, fox, raccoons and coyotes.

Our Doves

The white dove is a symbol of Peace and Love. The Dove is a member of the pigeon family.

They will fly home from great distances if they are familiar with the topography. Recently a study fixed a remote camera on a dove and released it several miles away from it's roost. The camera showed the Dove followed the road they arrived on even though they were in a sealed box during the transport. Once the Dove got to familiar territory, it changed direction and flew straight to it's roost. This dispels the common belief that they only use the sun for guidance.

We will release Doves in areas between and including Niagara Falls and Hamilton. Reservation are required. Our doves can be seen flying around our farm on nice days and releases for training purposed in our local area. Doves are available for sale.
